When is Mothers Day in South Africa you ask? Mothers’ Day is coming up on 12 May (that’s this Sunday!) and some people have still not given it a thought. If you are in need of last minute mothers day ideas, peruse this list to see if an appropriate idea for celebrating your mom catches your attention.
1) Take a vintage steam train from Pretoria to Cullinan, a historic diamond mining village.
The train leaves Hermanstad Station at 08:30 and returns at 17:30. Either have lunch at one of the quaint restaurants in the town or pack braai supplies and braai at the free facilities in Cullinan. For more information, contact Friends of the Rail: 012 767 7913
2) Take a day trip to Darling.
This delightful town, an hour from Cape Town, makes for a lovely day wine-tasting, checking out the Darling Craft Brewery, cycling through the quaint streets and investigating the innovative ‘Darling made me do it’ split piece graffiti piece – part of an arts upliftment project.
3) Go for a picnic.
Mothers’ Day need not be an expensive affair. Pack yourselves a yummy basket of home-made (or store-bought) goodies, and don’t forget the bubbly! Then head off to a beautiful location. Around Cape Town you could visit Kirstenbosch or Silvermine. In Durban the Botanical Garden is a winner and in Johannesburg the Emmarentia Dam and Botanical Gardens and the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens are no-brainers.
4) Take your mom to the Winelands.
There are loads of Mothers’ Day restaurant specials happening all over the Cape Winelands. Try Bodega @ Dornier Wines, Restaurant 1802 @ Oude Werf Hotel (all Stellenbosch) or Restaurant @ Glen Carlou in Paarl.
5) Take your mom to clip roses at the Chart Farm in Wynberg, Cape Town.
While it may sound like a slap in the face, the Chart Farm has a beautiful location and flower picking with the accompanying scents and colours is very therapeutic. There is also a sweet cafe which serves tea and cake
6) Perhaps your mom likes to live on the wild side – some do you know!
7) Perhaps an unusual idea, but some moms might appreciate something as simple as a scenic drive.
In the Western Cape routes abound. Close to Cape Town try the gorgeous stretch of road between Camps Bay and the end of Chapman’s Peak in Noordhoek. In outside East London you could take the windy mountain pass to Hogsback and in Kwazulu Natal you could drive a section of the Midlands Meander outside Pietermaritzburg or visit the Valley of 1000 Hills outside Durban.
