On Saturday, Cape Town Carnival held the fourth of its triweekly workshops aimed at stimulating and connecting Cape Town Carnival performers, artists and members of the public. The spotlight was on Umswenko, a fashion and music subculture originating in the 1970s among Zulu hostel dwellers, used to celebrate, entertain, and show off a sense of impeccable style, fashion and music, and build a higher degree of self-expression and self-confidence.
Carnival celebrates SA’s famous, fabulous ’50s-era music and dance as inspiration for today
The Cape Town Carnival held its third Cultural Creative Workshop last Saturday in its colourful Maitland premises. This first in-person occasion attracted a large audience, and strict physical distancing, hand sanitising and mask wearing didn’t deter active participation. The three-weekly workshops stimulate and connect the Cape Town Carnival community of performers, artists and interested public.

Cape Town Carnival explores creativity in our African cultural roots
The second of an eight-part online Cultural Creative Workshop series was held on Saturday by the Cape Town Carnival, which explored the dynamic character and flavour of African culture through its history, movement, rhythm and design in South Africa.

Cape Town Carnival hosts its first Cultural Creative Workshop online
The Cape Town Carnival, the annual showcase that celebrates the diversity of Cape Town and South Africa, held the first of eight Cultural Creative Workshops on Zoom last weekend. More than sixty community group leaders, performers, artists and artisans from across the Northern and Western Cape took part.
