Where to see the snow this winter

There is one positive to the recent streak of freezing cold weather we have been having – it means snow!
While S.A is hardly known for its snow falls, the truth is we do get a fair share all over the country in the winter months. If you would like to experience a bit of winter wonderland right here in sunny SA, take a trip to one of these areas:

Sutherland

Sutherland is a small Karoo town, famous for its warm hospitality, snowy winters, starlit nights and dramatic landscapes. It is also the coldest town in South Africa, with a record low of -16 degrees reached in 2003. It is located in the Northern Cape, roughly 350 km from Cape Town on the N1.

Hogsback

Hogsback is a magical world of mountains and forests, situated high up on the Amathole mountains of the Eastern Cape. It regularly receives snow in winter, further adding to its quaint, other-wordly ambience. Hogsback is 264 km from Port Elizabeth and 138 km from East London.

Fouriesburg

Fouriesburg, which is about three hours‘ drive from Johannesburg, provides plenty opportunity for outdoor adventure. Located in the mountains on the Lesotho border, there is snow in winter and inspiring views all-year round. It is a short distance from Clarens and the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

Southern Drakensberg

Due to the altitude in the high alpine climate of the Drakensberg, it has snowed in every single month of the year at one time in the past. With the snow, the landscape changes overnight into a white winter wonderland, attracting visitors in their droves. The Southern Drakensberg region is roughly 175 km from Durban.

The Cederberg

Deep blue skies and snow-capped winter mountains transform the Cederberg’s otherwise hot and dusty landscape. While generally fairly light, this area receives snow on a regular basis between May and September. The Cederberg is 188 km outside of Cape Town, definitely do-able for a weekend getaway

Lesotho

While technically not in South Africa it is as close! Lesotho is well know for its snow and is host to some African ski safari sites. Lesotho is made up of the Highlands and the Lowlands – the Highlands are where you will find the most impressive snow falls. It takes about 6 hrs to drive to Lesotho from Johannesburg.
