They may not be the most interesting places in South Africa but they certainly have the most interesting names. Just as SA is a colourful, quirky place, filled with diverse and quirky people so are some of the towns out there! Here are some of the funniest and strangest town names we could find:
Tietiesbaai situated in Saldanha in the Western Cape
This rather naughty town name was apparently inspired by the perfectly round boulders seen all around the bay, which possibly resemble a certain part of the female anatomy. Scandalous.
Tweebuffelsmeteenskootmorsdoodgeskietfontein in the North West province
This is one of the better known ‘strange’ town names in SA. Literally it translates to “two buffaloes shot dead using one shot fountain”. It just seems a bit specific, really?
Klein Mier Nommer Een in Mpumalanga
“Small ant number 1”?
What is, this a town for ants?
Ogies in Mpumulanga
A town called ‘eyes’ or more specifically ‘small eyes’ just seems a little creepy. Makes you think of “the hills have eyes”..
Kokstad in KwaZulu Natal
This town was named after a Griqua Chief, Adam Kok III. But we know what you all thought about.
Putsonderwater in the Northern Cape
A “well without water”. Not sure if this is a euphemism for something, but it comes across as very pessimistic.
Hotazel in the Northern Cape
As in ‘hot as hell’. The average midday temperature is 33.2 degrees in summer.
